Evaluation Q4 - James Parkhouse

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our target audience would be males and females between the age of 15 and 24. From our research questionnaire we established that our target audience would not be gender specific as both males and females like thrillers, with 80% of both genders saying that they would go to the cinema to watch a thriller. People of this age group like to socialise and are more likely to go to a cinema with friends, with an exciting, fast paced thriller film providing a good opportunity for friends to go out and socialise.
Our questionnaire told us that the thriller
genre is not gender specific as both males
and females like thrillers.

We decided that the certificate of our film would be a 15. This is because when researching current film listings, we found that all thrillers were rated either 12A or 15. During our research, we also looked at the BBFC age rating guidelines, and decided that our film would have potential for some strong violence and language, with a 15 age rating best suiting these themes.

Cinema listings tells us that most thrillers are rated 15
We also decided that a 15 age rating would suit the film better than an 18, as this would limit our audience, with the age range of some of the most frequent cinema goers and biggest thriller fans being too young to watch our film. A 15 age rating would allow us to have a larger audience, whereas an 18 rating would limit our potential audience.
Potential themes that could make our film a 15 age rating

An existing film that is similar to ours is The Purge (DeMonaco, 2013) which has a similar target audience to ours, with a 15 age rating. The film has suspense and unsettling, disturbing scenes from the outset, making the content similar to ours. Both films are likely to draw the same type of audience due to the similarities between them.

We have targeted our audience by having a teenage main character, which allow our audience to connect/empathise with our character, allowing them to relate to his life and the stress that he feels, as they may to experience something similar. We have also targeted our audience through our characters costume. He is wearing fashionable, trendy, modern clothes, and has a fashionable, trendy haircut, making him a relatable character to our target audience.
